Darren Til came into UFC Fight Night 118 as a slight underdog to perennial contender Donald Cerrone but quickly put the welterweight division on notice as he got the best of “Cowboy” early. Cerrone did get a takedown but Till got back up. Late in the first round Till caught Cerrone with a 1-2 that dropped “Cowboy”. Till jumped on him and kept punching him until the ref pulled him off for the TKO win.
Here’s the full fight video.
Afterwards Till called out Mike Perry who was sitting cageside. Perry was beside himself as he screamed and cursed at Till. Unfortunately “Platinum” is scheduled to fight Santiago Ponzinibbio in December. Should he get by him Perry-Till could be greenlit in early 2018. Perry has quickly become one of the most marketable guys in the welterweight division after some highlight reel knockouts and his wild personality. Till vs Perry would be a fight the UFC could put on as a main event for a FS1 card.
Cerrone has now lost three in a row and is at a crossroads. At 34 “Cowboy” is still capable of fighting but after today it looks like his best days are behind him. Perhaps Cerrone will look at going back to lightweight to finish his career. He left the division in 2016 after a loss to Rafael Dos Anjos. A fight with Kevin Lee would be a fight the UFC could put on as a co-main event on a Fox show that could bring in fans and determine whether or not Cerrone is still a player at 155.
We’ll have to see how it plays out. Five years ago Dana White would’ve likely made Cerrone retire. Now under new ownership we’ve seen fan favorites like BJ Penn and Andrei Arlovski continue to fight after long losing streaks when they would’ve been cut or put out to pasture under the Fertittas.
