Hardcore UFC fans knew that BJ Penn was in trouble heading into UFC Fight Night: Rodríguez vs. Penn in Phoenix tonight. Yair Rodriguez was the tenth ranked fighter in the UFC and his unique striking style make him one of the top prospects in the division. Penn put up a good fight in the first round but early in the second Rodriguez knocked the former champ down and rained down punches until the ref was forced to stop the fight.

Penn has now lost four straight fights and will likely be pressured by UFC President Dana White to retire. But with WME now owning the UFC we might see “The Prodigy” get another fight as the new owners are trying to make some money after paying $4 billion for the promotion last summer.
Rodriguez came out throwing punches and kicks early in the fight. Penn didn’t know where they were coming from and got knocked down a couple of times in the first round.
Jon Anik didn’t get a chance to talk to Penn after the loss and we won’t know what the future has in store for him just yet. At 38 years of age Penn is on the downside of his career after being one of the most dominating fighters in the UFC from 2007 to 2009. Retirement is likely the best option, but you never know what BJ Penn is going to do.
The UFC now has a new star in Rodriguez who they can build around. Coming into the fight a lot of fans didn’t really know who he was but after beating a legend on free TV he will jump up in the UFC’s rankings and get another big fight in his next outing.
