Smackdown gets their time to shine Sunday at Backlash. The card isn’t exactly stacked but anytime Jinder Mahal is in a title match you have to tune in (Just Kidding). For some reason we have Jinder Mahal in the main event and AJ Styles wrestling Kevin Owens for the United States title. And for those that didn’t see Luke Harper and Erick Rowan wrestle the first 854 times, we get to see it again. Who booked this stuff?
Anyway, let’s get to the picks and predictions.
Luke Harper vs Erick Rowan
With Rowan getting a win over Harper recently it’s safe to say Harper comes out on top Sunday. I think eventually they reunite and form a Wyatt Family stable and go for the tag titles since that’s where they should be. Harper comes out on top and hopefully he breaks Rowan’s goofy sheep robot mask in the process.
Sami Zayn vs Baron Corbin
As much as WWE fans want Sami to win Vince McMahon and Triple H are grooming Baron Corbin to be one of the top guys in the WWE for years to come. Sami will get his run one day but it won’t be Sunday. Corbin wins and continues his slow burn to the main event picture.
Naomi, Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch vs Natalya, Tamina and Carmella
This one has Charlotte turning heel all over it. I just don’t see her playing nice with Naomi since she has the belt. Also, there is money in a Becky Lynch vs Charlotte feud since they have a long history together in NXT before coming to the main roster. Natalya, Tamina and Carmella get the win.
Shinsuke Nakamura vs Dolph Ziggler
As much as I’d like to Ziggler get the win here, I’m afraid the internet would break if he beat Nakamura clean. The WWE has turned Ziggler into a glorified jobber despite his ability to steal the show every night. Nakamura is being groomed to be the champion and he gets the win over Dolph on Sunday.
The Usos vs Breezango
Breezango have been the best thing on WWE TV recently. Until recently Tyler Breeze and Fandango were nothing more than glorified tag team jobbers but they seem to be hitting their stride with the fashion police gimmick that fans are getting behind. They are ridiculous and over the top but it’s good to see Fandango finally get a little bit of a push after being jobbed out for the past few years. I think Breezango get the win and will be a lot of fun to watch with the tag belts in coming weeks.
Kevin Owens vs AJ Styles
I don’t see AJ Styles beating Kevin Owens at Backlash. For one, Styles doesn’t need the U.S. belt to be relevant and I think it could actually hold him back. And two, Owens needs the belt because his ‘Face of America’ gimmick is entertaining. Somehow Owens wins with assistance or by some underhanded act to retain the belt. Styles will likely get a rematch next month and then move on to a new feud.
Randy Orton vs Jinder Mahal
Can Jinder Mahal really beat Randy Orton? Yes, as long as it’s by count out or DQ. I think somehow Rusev gets involved and gets Jinder disqualified. It was nice to see “The Maharajah” get a run in the main events but the fans don’t take him seriously after he was jobbed out since returning last year. Orton either wins or Jinder Mahal wins by DQ. Either way I expect to Rusev come down to the ring and establish himself as one of the top guys on the blue brand by taking out Randy Orton on the pay per view.
