John Cena is back in the WWE after taking a break late in the year to work on another movie. He is scheduled to face AJ Styles at the Royal Rumble for the WWE Title and will likely win it heading into Wrestlemania 33. The WWE has been touting him possibly breaking Ric Flair’s record of sixteen world titles and it’s likely Cena will break it this year. But what’s next after Cena breaks the record? What will he do next? He’s clearly done it all and has been the face of the company for years. His act appeals to kids and he gets 50% boos and 50% cheers when he makes an entrance. In 2017 Cena needs to embrace the dark side and finally turn on the fans.
There are a lot of ways to do this and make a big splash. I would like to see him be the leader of the Bullet Club in the WWE and basically copy the roadmap WCW used to get turn Hulk Hogan in the 90s. Have Kenny Omega come in and form a faction with AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson, Luke Gallows and Finn Balor. The WWE can even build up to a big Bullet Club vs WWE match featuring Omega, Styles, Nakamuara, Anderson, Gallows and Balor against top WWE stars Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens and of course John Cena. Cena would turn on his team at the end of the match to reveal himself as the leader of the Bullet Club. By setting up a turn in that situation the WWE can have Cena face Undertaker, Reigns or any other member of Team WWE for the rest of the year. Basically the Bullet Club becomes the new NWO and terrorizes the WWE roster for a year or so until the storyline gets stale. Cena could still work part time while Omega and Styles do all the heavy lifting until it’s time for a pay per view.
There are other ways to turn him. Everyone knows that Vince McMahon has been entertaining the idea of booking Cena against Undertaker at Wrestlemania 33. If they pull the trigger and put Cena and Taker in the main event of Mania they could have Cena cheat to beat “The Dead Man” to win the match. Beating the Undertaker is way to get some heat but to have him do it by cheating would put him on a different level and make him the most dastardly heel in the WWE.
Cena has been reluctant to turn heel in the past due to his work with The Make A Wish Foundation. He’s worked with sick kids for years and has spoke openly about not wanting to turn heel until they had someone ready to take over his role in the organization. Roman Reigns has been groomed despite the fans not getting completely onboard. If Vince McMahon can convince Cena that it’s Reigns’ time maybe we finally see the long awaited heel turn.
Hulk Hogan flirted with a heel turn in 1995 when he was battling the Dungeon of Doom and Kevin Sullivan. He ultimately stayed a babyface until he went all in at Bash at the Beach in 1996 when he turned on Sting, Lex Luger and Macho Man and formed the NWO with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. It wound up shaking up pro wrestling and helped propel WCW to new heights as a promotion. A John Cena heel turn could likely do the same thing for Vince McMahon and the WWE.
Cena has been going strong as the white meat babyface for far too long. It’s time to shake things up and make the WWE interesting again.
