Summerslam 2017 Needs a Heel Shield Reunion

There’s been a lot of talk about Brock Lesnar leaving the WWE later this year or early 2018 to go back to the UFC for a big money fight against Jon Jones. There’s been so much chatter online that Paul Heyman even worked in some references to Lesnar’s potential return to the octagon in his latest promo on RAW Monday night. Heyman has vowed that if Lesnar loses the title in a Fatal Fourway at Summerslam he is leaving the WWE since the match wasn’t fair. There have been rumors that Vince McMahon is trying to cut costs and since Lesnar is one of the highest paid athletes on the WWE roster we might be seeing him step away for a while. If Lesnar does lose the belt at Summerslam and takes some time off until Survivor Series or Royal Rumble the WWE has a way to keep fans interested in the meantime-A heel Shield reunion.

Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins have been trying to work out their issues for the past month leading up to Summerslam. On Monday night we finally got the two former Shield members on the same page and they will now face Cesaro and Sheamus for the RAW tag belts on the show. We all know Ambrose and Rollins are going to win and theirs only so much they can do in the RAW tag team division. Wouldn’t it be something if they came out to help Reigns win the WWE Universal Title at the end of the night?

With Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe and Roman Reigns facing Lesnar in the main event it would play out perfectly if Ambrose and Rollins came out to help their Shield brother. Ambrose and Rollins could take out Samoa Joe and Strowman and then help Reigns take out Lesnar. Reigns gets the win and is now the champ. So now the hottest faction in wrestling is back together holding titles as bad guys. Suddenly the absence of Lesnar isn’t a big deal as Vince McMahon can turn Joe and Strowman who are getting cheers to babyfaces to face the newly formed Shield for the next few months. The WWE can elevate someone like Finn Balor to team up with Joe and Strowman to battle the big, nasty Shield.

What does the WWE have to lose? Ambrose has lost a lot of steam the past two years after he had his legs cut out from under him when he faced Lesnar at Mania two years ago. Rollins is a terrible babyface that does a terrible job of getting fans invested in him as a good guy. Reigns is basically a bad guy anyway despite selling a ton of merchandise at Live Events. Turning them heel would be a smart business decision.

There have been rumblings that a second roster shakeup is coming in a few weeks and McMahon could move Erik Rowan and/or Luke Harper over to RAW as babyfaces to reform the Wyatt Family with Bray Wyatt and Strowman to face the Shield. Wyatt needs to be turned babyface. He’s so good on the mic and with his intros the crowd pops for him no matter how bad he is booked or how long he is booked as a villain. We’ve see the Wyatts vs Shield a hundred times but we’ve never seen them go at it with the Wyatts being the good guys and the Shield as the heels.

Reuniting “The Club” with Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson alongside Finn Balor might be an option as opponents for the Shield. Gallows and Anderson have been handled poorly ever since they lost their initial feud with the Usos when they debuted two years ago. At one point they were red hot but now they are a bad mid-card comedy act. Turning them babyface and sticking them with Balor would create a lot of intrigue, especially to fans who are familiar with them from New Japan and the Bullet Club. If McMahon wanted to get crazy he could send Shinsuke Nakamura and/or AJ Styles to join them in their cause.

RAW has gotten stale and if Lesnar is taking time off McMahon has to do something to keep the product fresh. Luckily he has a Shield reunion in his back pocket. By turning them heel when he does it would make everyone’s head explode on Sunday night.
