Robert Whittaker shook up the UFC middleweight division last night in Kansas City with a huge upset TKO win over “Jacare” Souza. Souza is a former Strikeforce middleweight champ who was in line for a title shot with a win over Whittaker. The TUF Smashes star didn’t get the memo and is now on his way to the top of the division with the win over “Jacare”.
It was announced over the weekend that the UFC gave Souza a new eight fight deal. Looking back now, that probably wasn’t the best idea.
Currently the middleweight division is at a standstill waiting on Michael Bisping and Georges St. Pierre to fight. With GSP coming back and getting an immediate title shot everone else in the division is stuck in a log jam. Luke Rockhold, Anderson Silva and Gegard Mousasi could all lay claim to a title shot but with the champ unavailable to fight until possibly later this year or early 2018 it creates a problem for the entire division.
Whittaker has now won seven straight fights and will likely fight Luke Rockhold or another top guy later this year.
