Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone were set to face off last October at UFC 205 in New York. Unfortunately the fight never happened due to Lawler backing out after losing his welterweight title to Tyron Woodley. ‘Cowboy’ is always down to fight so all the UFC had to do was get Lawler onboard. Cerrone vs Lawler looks to be like one of the best fights of the year on paper due to the exciting styles of both men in the octagon. ESPN first reported the matchup earlier today.
Cerrone was approaching contender status but it blew up in his face when after beating Matt Brown at UFC 206 he pushed for a fight with Jorge Masvidal a month and a half later in Denver. Masvidal got the win and Cerrone got knocked down a few rungs on the UFC welterweight ladder.
Lawler has been out of action since losing the title to Woodley last July at UFC 201. Before dropping the belt “Ruthless” had won five straight and had all but cleaned out the division. Now if he can get the win over Cerrone at UFC 213 it’s thought that Lawler could get an immediate title shot later this year.
UFC 213 will take place on July 8 in Las Vegas. Jon Jones could make his return to the UFC at the event. He was suspended for a year and he will be reinstated in early July, just in time to be added to the card. But officially no other fights for the show have been announced. Typically the UFC runs a pretty strong card July 4th weekend every year so we can expect more matchups to be be added in the coming weeks.
