Fresh off of a win over UFC legend Vitor Belfort over the weekend, Kelvin Gastelum will head back to Brazil to face another in June when he gets Anderson Silva in Rio de Janeiro at UFC 212. Gastelum looks to get his fourth straight win and could be in title contention should he defeat “The Spider” on his home turf.
Gastelum was a contender at 170 before missing weight in two out of three fights and dropping a split decision to Neil Magny in 2015. Since then he beat Johny Hendricks by decision and TKO’d Tim Kennedy and Vitor Belfort. Currently Gastelum is ranked #8 at 185 pounds but with the title up being defended against Georges St. Pierre the entire division is in a holding pattern until Bisping-GSP goes down later this year.
Silva is coming off a controversial decision win over Derek Brunson last month. Before that he had dropped two straight and was thought to being a gatekeeper in the division. But with the win the former champ is right back in the mix at 185 pounds and could find himself fighting for the title again if he can beat Gastelum. At 41 years of age the time is now if Silva wants to have a run as the champ and a setback against the former TUF champ would likely put an end to any talk of a title fight.
Odds aren’t currently available but Gastelum will likely be a big favorite when the fight opens up on sportsbooks.
UFC 212 is scheduled to take place on June 3, 2017 at the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Max Holloway vs Jose Aldo is set as the main event for the UFC featherweight title.
