We thought we were going to see Fedor Emelianenko vs. Matt Mitrione earlier this year but at the last second Mitrione had to pull out of the fight due to kidney stones and the fight got pushed back until June. Tonight the two men finally squared off in the Bellator cage and we got to see the fireworks many expected between the two heavyweights.
Despite five straight wins Fedor Emelianenko came into the fight a slight underdog to Mitrione. At 40 years of age and without a fight in almost a year you had to wonder what kind of shape “The Last Emperor” would be in. Fedor is always a draw and if he won it’s thought he would fight Roy Nelson later this year.
Mitrione is one of those guys that either he gets knocked out or he does the knocking out and he lived up to his reputation in New York against his Russian opponent. The former Ultimate Fighter star hasn’t been to a decision since 2011 and was coming off two straight wins by knockout since joining Bellator last year. Mitrione had been lobbying for a fight with Roy Nelson next and a win over Fedor could make that possible. But tonight he had his hands full with the former PRIDE champion.
Did Mitrione get a big win over the legend or did Fedor do what he always does and shut up his critics with a big win at Madison Square Garden? It was a wild night in New York. Check out the video below to see how it all went down.
