Cormier vs Jon Jones

Daniel Cormier will face Jimi Manuwa or Jon Jones at UFC 214

It’s up to Jon Jones whether or not he wants to fight Daniel Cormier for the UFC light heavyweight title in July or not. Should Jones want to fight for the belt in his first bout in 15 months he will get to fight ‘DC’, a man he defeated by unanimous decision in 2015. But if ‘Bones’ decides he wants a tuneup fight Cormier will face Manuwa instead.

Today Cormier went on Instagram to announce he will be fighting at UFC 214 in Anaheim but was still waiting to see who his opponent was.

Cormier and Manuwa have been going at it on Twitter in the past few days and it’s clear that the two want to fight each other.

Manuwa is 6-2 in the UFC but both of his losses have come to perennial contenders Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson. Manuwa knocked out Corey Anderson last month and is hoping the win parlays into a fight for the title. Currently “Poster Boy” is ranked #3 in the UFC official rankings at 205 pounds.

Dana White announced yesterday that Jones will get the immediate title shot once his USADA suspension ends in early July. Should he want to fight ‘DC’ again Jones will be eligible by July 29 when the event takes place in Anaheim, California. ‘Bones’ has been relatively quiet the past few days on Twitter and it’s not known what exactly he wants to do. When he returned last March to fight Ovince St. Preux after a fifteen month layoff the former champ looked rusty and couldn’t put away OSP. If Jones looks like he did against St. Preux Cormier will have a chance to get a win over his bitter rival. But at 38 years of age ‘DC’ doesn’t have many fights left in him and Jones may want to challenge for the belt right away rather that risk Cormier losing to Manuwa.

A Manuwa vs Jones fight is intriguing but Cormier vs Jones will do a lot more buys on pay per view due to their history. Jones gets a cut of each pay per view and may want to fight Cormier right away for the biggest pay day.

UFC 214 will take place on July 29 in Anaheim, California. No other fights have been announced but it’s thought that Cristiane ‘Cyborg’ Justino vs Germaine de Randamie will headline. Dana White has spoken out about putting Jones in a headlining spot due to his troubles with the law and failed drug test before UFC 200.
