Bobby Roode retains NXT Title at NXT:Takeover Chicago

After two wins over Shinsuke Nakamura Bobby Roode has been on top of NXT since January. Now with Nakamura on Smackdown Roode faced a new test in Chicago tonight against Hideo Itami at NXT Takeover.

It was a back and forth affair that saw Roode in trouble early. It looked like Itami was going to be the new NXT champ after hitting the Go To Sleep but Roode was able to roll out of the ring to avoid the pin.

The end of the match came when Roode managed to get out of the Go To Sleep and reverse it into a DDT and then roll through into a second DDT. Itami was done and the champ got the 1-2-3 to retain the NXT title. Not many people expected to see Roode get the clean pin as champ but he did just that despite being a heel.

It will be interesting to see what Triple H and Vince McMahon have in store for Roode now that he’s disposed of Itami. Cassius Ohno or Roderick Strong appear to be the next in line for a title shot as the two are fan favorites who could easily be slid into the NXT title picture to feud with Roode until we get to the next NXT pay per view the weekend of Summerslam in August.

Roode is a star and it’s only a matter of time before he’s on the main roster. He’s taken the “Glorious” gimmick and made his own, taking it to the next level. But with Nakamura, Tye Dillinger and Dash and Dawson getting called up after Wrestlemania Roode may have to wait until after Wrestlemania 34 next April to get his shot on the main roster. NXT needs some top guys to build around and Roode is that guy right now.
