Interview with Shonie Carter

So what have you been up to? I heard you were on the Iron Ring?
Yeah, I did that a while ago. I’m branching out. I’m doing everything. I’m trying to get women modeling contracts. I’m doing autograph signings in Indiana. I do a little of everything.
You aren’t done fighting are you?
I beat John Cronk for my eleventh world title. I’m fighting in late August against Matt Majors from the Tap Out show.
Didn’t you sign with Strikeforce?
Yes.
You’ve won 6 out of your last 7 fights hadn’t you?
Yes, I’ve been tearing through people.
How did you get started in MMA?
I was in college and my friends didn’t believe I could fight. They knew I was in the Marines but they couldn’t believe that I could do what I do. And I just kept doing it.
When did you start?
It had to be 1995, maybe 96. I’ve been around a while.
So if I would’ve told you in 1995 that you’d be fighting 13 years later what would you have told me?
Man, get out of here! (laughs)
What are you most proud of from your career?
I’m still at it and winning. I’m still taking care of my babies. The biggest thing is that I’m still winning.
How did you get selected for the Ultimate Fighter?
I walked in for the interview and I knew they wanted me. It was a no-brainer.
I did got to the interview but I didn’t have to do anything. I just talked a little shit and made the Exectuive Producer give me a hug. I told her if she didn’t have a man I was going to take her out dancing. I didn’t have to say much they knew how tough I am. I got more belts than some guys have fights.
Rich Clementi picked you for the first fight on the show what are your thoughts on that fight?
When I was on the show I didn’t want anyone to touch me. I could do cardio. I showed up out of shape. I told all of them I could kick all of their asses even though they were all in shape. Just wait and see what happens when I do get in shape. You’re all in trouble.
It seems like Matt Serra wanted to fight you again but you weren’t really interested.
I don’t care who I fight. I’m at the point in my career who I fight as long as the checks got a bunch of 9’s on it. I want 9’s on my check. I am worth it. I’m probably one of the most marketable fighters out there. Some of the fighters may be better than me. But here’s the difference. I look good and I’m articulate. I put a suit on and you remember me. No matter who you talk about in any division or weight class what can you say about them beside how they fight? Rampage has a chain around his neck. Chuck has a mohawk. Georges is Georges. Anderson Silva is a fighter. When you say Shonie Carter? he knocked out Matt Serra. He was on the Iron Ring? Did you hear what Shonie said? Did you see the women Shonie’s with? How many Ultimate fighters have bee in the ring with a World Champion boxer? anderson Silva tried but they squashed it? I did. I’m in movies. People say we are self-induldged. It’s true. We are in a testosterone, egotisitical driven sport.
I think im a different cat than most fighters. I’m the most decorated, cross competing, complete Mixed Martial Artist ever. I give the much respect to Matt Hughes, he’s going to be a Hall of Famer. Same with Randy Couture. I give uber props to Georges St. Pierre, Anderson Silva, and BJ Penn. Not one of those guys can say that they have a world title in kickboxing or a world title in grappling. We knew Georges, Randy, and Anderson are champions. Frank Shamrock is another one. But the fact is I have three different black belts. I taught Georges St. Pierre the throw he used on Matt Hughes. I’m not knocking Georges. He’s my homie. That’s my guy. I need to call him and see if we can work out together.
He’s got a big fight with Fitch coming up.
I like them both. I lost to Fitch. I still see Georges winning that fight. It’ll be a good fight.
You do have a good character that does make you stand out similar to a WWE character.
I try to tell the other fighters out there you got to be different this is entertainment. If you want to wear an Affliction shirt, God bless you make your money. But after your fifteen minutes is up you look like everyone else. No one smiles. They all sound alike during the interviews. Have fun. Don’t be MMA clones.
Yeah my wife gets some of the fighters mixed up.
You need something to make you stand out.
You need your own reality show.
Yeah, I’ll charge them half of what Chappelle would charge them.
Do you prefer to fight in a ring or cage?
I don’t care whoever has the biggest checks. My motto is Fuck you pay me.
That’s from Goodfellas isn’t it?
Yeah, it’s from Goodfellas. That’s my new idiology.
Is there anybody out there you haven’t fought but you’d like to?
I know some people have talked about me and Serra 3. He and I talked about it. I was out partying with him and he said, OK Shonie we’ll do a third one but no spinning backfists. I said ok as long as you don’t do anything omoplata shit.
That fight would be fairly marketable and shouldn’t be hard to set up.
Yeah but I’m out of the UFC right now. That’s the trilogy that should ever been. We knew the outcome before they ever fought.
Did it suprise you that Matt Serra beat GSP?
No…not at all.
What are your thougths on Kimbo Slice?
I have a lot of respect for the way he’s gone from a street fighter to a grossly overpaid MMA Superstar. Take their money. But on another hand it repulses me that two legitimate fighters were on the undercard and he was the main event. He’s the fighter who put his underground fights on the internet. My only regret is that I didn’t do it. He is undefeated against shitty fighters. The only guy who beat him in a shoot fight, Sean Gannon got fucked up in the UFC.
Their are guys who fight and there are fighters. Fight fans don’t know shit. They know stats and they know the names. Kimbo is a guy who fights. Let me put my natural forty pounds on and I’ll kick his ass. It’s unfair to say that because I’m a veteran of over 200 fights. For someone to give him 6 figures and make him a freak show main event, I won’t be impressed until he has 10 or 12 more fights. Let him fight 10 more times and see if he still wants to do it. It’s a slap in the fight of guys like Carlos Newton, Maurice Smith, Kevin Randleman and Yves Edwards. Kimbo’s not a black icon of MMA. I can name a lot of black fighters. Kimbo, keep doing what you’re doing. Take the money from those ignorant promoters that are paying you 6 figures. Because if one day I fight for the EliteXC one day I’ll walk into that office and drop all thirteen championship belts on that desk and I’ll tell them to not bring anything short at all. I’ve paid my dues against some of the UFC’s best fighters.
Would you put all of those belts up against him?
I’d put every last one of them and wouldn’t give a damn if he beat me. He would know what a dogfight is. His regulated street fights weren’t real street fights. A real street fight don’t have rules. No choking, no grappling. That’s not a street fight. I have a DVD of me fighting in a Mexican night club fighting anybody and everybody of different height and weight classes. I fought a guy 6 ‘6 260 pounds. We fought tooth and nail until I choked him unconcious.
I’m not challenging Kimbo. What do I have to gain? I beat a big bald headed black guy. It’s black on black crime. Lord knows I haven’t done that before. If he can hang 15 minutes with me I would consider him the winner if it went the distance. I know Bas Rutten trains him and I have a lot of respect for Bas Rutten but you can have King Kong in your corner but that doesn’t mean you can climb a building.
People didn’t know me until I was on Ultimate Fighter. Who is Shonie Carter? They didn’t know who I was until they saw that silly spinning backfist. and then I was on the first fight against Clementi and they showed my record and they were like, Holy Shit. That’s not even my record. They had to cut some off. I have fights on VHS that aren’t on there. I’m just having fun now. I’m going to travel the world and sleep with the girls. I’m going to act funny and wear a kilt and do the damn thing.
One day when your gradkids are sitting on your lap what’s the one fight you would tell them about?
Dave Menne, former middleweight champion of the UFC. Actually both fights. The first fight we fought for 20 minutes. The first round was 15 and the second was 5.
Then there was the fight with Pat Militich that went down in a baseball field and we went straight 25 minutes. I punched and kicked him all around the ring and they gave him the decision. I had the only takedown of that fight.
The first time you fought Menne you beat him then your had a rematch and it was a draw.
Yeah, everyone thought I was going to get my ass kicked but I showed them.
What do you think about EliteXC and Affliction? Is competition a bad thing for the sport?
I think there are too many champions out there. It gives fighters more opporutniies to make a living but I daisagree with Monte Cox. He calls everyone else Triple A. I don’t think juist becuase you fight in UFC you are a better fighter than me. They have the biggest budget of any organization in MMA but I don’t think less of any other organization. Look at what EliteXC is doing? They took some UFC fighters. Remember what they said about Pride fighters? How long did it take for them to get their asses kicked?
How many UFC level fighters can you take and put in a kickboxing match? A real kickboxing match. Not many. Most of the guys in the UFCcouldn’t do it. How many guys could go to the Olympic trials and do judo? Karo Parisyan, Manny Gamburian, and myself. That’s just how it is. You can’t take these guys and put them in an organization run by casino money and that makes them tough. If they come to Chicago I got something for them. It’s a different mentality. A lot of those guys learned in acadamies. I learned in the streets. Street fighting, Dojo fighting, and cage fighting are entirely different. The differnece is I cross conmpeted. I got out of the streets like Kimbo. I did it alot longer and a lot better. He just did it on TV. I know guys who don’t train much who could kick his ass. But God bless him take that money. How about that fight where I fought 6 guys at once? No one knows about that. I have it on DVD. I got a DVD that has forty-something fights that ain’t on the internet. Where do they get my record? If I have 40 fights on one DVD and 12 on another that’s more than 50 fights that aren’ton my record. I have some on VHS I haven’t put on DVD yet. I’m fighting 2 or 3 guys at once. Wow.
Am I washed up? I don’t know. I’m like Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock but I got more miles that both of them. My bodies getting old.
Anything else you want to say to the fans?
Yeah, they can hit me up on Myspace.
